Hello! Welcome to season 2 of the Statement Makers Podcast. I’m your host Karen Vergara.

I am trying new things this season. So for this episode, I'm doing something completely different from other episodes. This time, I won't have a guest. I have decided that every once in a while, I'll put on my headphones and set up my microphone and simply share my thoughts with you.

I started this podcast with simply an idea to highlight stories that are not being told. Stories of ordinary individuals, yes (like you and me) who have overcome obstacles and  are making a difference in their community.

I took a break from the podcast because honestly, I am in a season of change. I wanted to reassess my commitment to this podcast and to the stories I'm telling and guess what, I am more committed than when I started in mid-2020.

During this break, I was thinking about a few things like: what season 2 should be about, the importance of the podcast and why you are listening to this today. And a word kept popping in my head - PURPOSE.

Recently, Disney released a movie called Soul. If you haven't seen it, it's the story of a music middle school teacher who felt that he had not fulfilled his life purpose which was to become a famous musician.  So, Joe, the music teacher finally had his chance to become a famous musician and realized it wasn't really what he wanted.

One of the things that struck me about the movie was the idea that some of us can become engulfed in the desire to fulfil what we believe is our purpose and  we miss the point of living . and also on the other hand, some of us may simply never even begin the search to fulfill it and we also miss the point of living.

And so I asked myself, why is that? I think I may have a reason. We simply don't understand what IS PURPOSE.

I'm by no means an expert in this area but it is one of the things that I'm really passionate about. Helping others discover, define and live out their purpose.

We tend to overcomplicate purpose. Purpose is simply the reason why you are alive. Period.

The way I see it is you are not just an ordinary human being and nothing in your life has been a coincidence. I have the strong belief that you were created for a specific reason. The combination of your talents, gifts, experiences and even suffering is unique, yet it was specifically designed so you could be part of this beautiful tapestry called Humanity.

Purpose is the divine reason why you're alive.

By now you may or not have realized that I believe in God. A supreme being who is all loving and all powerful. I don't know what your beliefs are and trust me, I'm not here to question what they are or not. I am just here to present a point of view and my hope is that you see this without judgement or pre-conception.

Understanding that purpose is divine is accepting that it was given to me by God. With that comes a lot of other "baggage" if you will. It means accepting the other things that come along with your purpose, like the place where you were born, the parents that you have, the "cards" that have been dealt to you and that you necessarily didn't get a chance to choose.

In the same way that I did not choose to be born in a developing country, to a father who was an alcoholic, drug addict, with several mental health issues and that abused my mother physically and emotionally. I did not choose a mother who had a difficult childhood, had me at age 21 by herself and didn't even have a high school education.

But just like there's "baggage" with your divine purpose, there are some good cards that you were dealt and you did not choose. In my case, it was the fact that I did not choose to be born in a country where values like family and work-hard attitude to get ahead are so important. I did not choose to be born to a dad who was very smart and had the ability to connect with others easily and passed some of those gifts down to me through his DNA. I did not choose to be born to a mother who despite her circumstances, made the decision to have me with faith that God would provide for her and her child. I did not choose a mother who also valued education so much that eventually she ended up going to Law School giving me an unmatched example of perseverance and faith.

What I'm trying to say is that if you accept that you have a divine purpose, you also need to accept that the circumstances or situations for which you have not had control over have been good and bad. Period.  There's no questioning at this point. Just accepting.

I know individuals who say, Karen - I have been dealt a lot of good cards in my life. If that's you, that's awesome! Don't feel guilty about it. There's a reason for that, there's a purpose behind all of those good cards you were dealt. Don't think that because you've had a relatively easy or good life that your purpose is not to be discovered or that you have to go through pain to discover it. That's just not true. I'll speak about that in future episodes.

By accepting all the cards that we have been dealt with, the good cards and the bad, we can begin our quest to discovering our Divine Purpose. We don't need to know it all, we don't need to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we just accept and let that sink in.

So my question to you to today is have you accepted that you have a divine purpose?

And if you have, do you accept all the cards that you were dealt, not just the bad ones, but also the good ones?

So here's what it's going to happen in the podcast…. at least for season 2. In between each guest conversation, I am going to jump in here again for just a few minutes to talk about purpose. As you listen to each guest conversation, I hope you start to think about their purpose and tie it back to these shorter episodes.

Each guest that I've invited in this season has something to share with us about purpose and I will be doing my best to highlight that through my questions and our conversation.

Before I go, I want to just say thank you. Thank you for listening, for sharing this podcast with your loved ones and for simply being part of this community of Statement Makers.
